Opening Receptions: David Maisel & Taha Heydari
January 4 @ 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm
Haines Gallery is pleased begin 2018 with two concurrent solo exhibitions: “Proving Ground” by David Maisel and “Running Rabbits” by Taha Heydari. While unique in their aesthetic approaches, both shows address timely concerns that include the power of media imagery, humanity’s impact on the environment, and the spectacle and stagecraft of politics and war.
“Proving Ground”, our seventh solo exhibition by San Francisco-based photographer David Maisel, investigates the surreal landscape and architecture of Dugway Proving Ground, a classified military site in the American desert, where chemical and biological weapons and defense programs are developed and tested. The resulting photographs and videos reference Land Art and the language of minimalism to describe an American West in which the terrain itself has become a measuring device for toxicity levels, dispersal patterns, and threats to the human body.
“Running Rabbits” is our second solo exhibition with Baltimore-based Iranian painter Taha Heydari. A distinctly post-Internet painter, Heydari adopts the visual style of new media and digital art to explore the power of imagery. Each painting resembles a striking digital tapestry, encoded with layers of fragmentary images, content, and associations. Throughout the show, Heydari highlights the complex relationships between image and reality.
